The Burberry!

For those who missed the post, I have a 12 year old seldom worn impeccable ink blue Burberry peacoat. Has fab lining too!

It has two strikes against it: It's very dark, and an odd-to-me length.

Lessons learned:

  1. Navy, and all dark outerwear, is not versatile for my style. I passed on a navy trench coat a few years ago too. I love dark blue! But not in outerwear, shoes, or bags.
  1. Watch that high-thigh topper length. It wasn't my favourite length in the '80s and '90s either. I prefer toppers shorter on longer.

That said, I've figured out how to love my Burberry coat in smaller doses.

# Wear it with a high contrast top like cream or citron to lighten the dark. Cream belt and boots to match and lighten the dark column. Light bag too.

#Wear it with navy bottoms to offset the length I don't like. The navy columned effect creates a low contrast between the topper and the bottom, which makes the horizontal line disappear. It disguises the length.

Here are four bottom options:

1. Navy Pinstripe Wide Legs - love! Will wear this. (#2 -#5)

2. Cream Barrels - do not love. The high contrast accentuates the length I don't like. Will not wear this. (#6 - #7)

3. Navy Flared Trouser Jeans - love! Will wear this. (#8 - #10)

4. Navy Big Cuff Slouchy Jeans - love!  Will wear this.

I won't wear this column of dark often. Just from time to time when the mood strikes. And when I do, it's with a happy heart :)  xo

What a treat and very instructive! I have to admit to looking at the photos before reading the text and I agree with you completely - the only one I don't love is the white barrel jeans. I especially like outfit #3 and am inspired to dig out my flared trouser jeans.

  • MsMary replied 2 weeks ago

*waving at my fraternal belt twin * Oof! That navy plaid lining is sending me into orbit!! And I love how you've styled it! (And also? Your hair looks AMAZING!!)

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

Jaime, HIGH FIVE :) The flared trousers jeans are the most classic I think. Quiet and traditionally flattering. There is room for that too :)

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

Mary, *waving back*! Humbled to have launched you into orbit! And thanks for the hair love! Had a cut last week :)

  • Laura replied 2 weeks ago

Styling University is open and in session! Your strategy to wear it with navy bottoms to offset the length is working perfectly! The coat's length harkens back to the era where we wore longer tops over slim bottoms. You've found a way to make it work with shorter tops and more voluminous bottoms. Side note - your hair is stunning, and a beautiful length! Looking gorgeous from head to toe!

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

Laura, HAH! Thanks for making me laugh, and for your awfully kind words! *Blushing* Dead right about the coat's length harkening back to an era of "long over lean". I'm going for "long over wide" ;)

  • Kyle replied 2 weeks ago

When it comes to outfit creation, I am always open to better understand how to analyze what works or does not work, and how to improve accordingly. So this is a useful and helpful exercise. Love your sassy haircut, Angie!

  • Sal replied 2 weeks ago

This is so interesting and thank you for showing what works and what is harder to make work.  I totally agree with you!

Useful for me to remember with those awkward lengths to match the length of the coat (or top) to the pants to make it lower contrast.

I love 1 3 4 and think they are awesome options for when you are in the mood!

  • Irina replied 2 weeks ago

It seam that you prefer to style this jacket with pants that elongate your legs. It makes sense since shorter and high contrast pants cut you visually in half. My favorite is #1 - very fashion forward. And I agree with others - your hair looks fabulous!

  • slim cat replied 2 weeks ago

Love the look with navy trousers - a bit of modern take on 70s ;-) !
    The hair is fabulous!

  • Bijou replied 2 weeks ago

The navy pinstripe pants, I die....simply gorgeous on you!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 2 weeks ago

Nicely done, Angie! I love seeing what options you prefer and why.

  • Star (Lise) replied 2 weeks ago

What a fantastic outfit lab. I love it with the denim trouser jeans the most. I have a red trench at the same awkward length and don't love it. I would not want to wear it with red pants. It is in and out of the holding zone!

  • Cookie replied 2 weeks ago

It’s very sharp! I do like it with the white jeans just as much as the dark ones but I guess I’m not that picky, haha.

Do you not close the buttons or are you just trying to highlight what you’re wearing under it for demonstration purposes? On me I like double-breasted jackets well enough but they never look right unbuttoned. For me that length of coat (buttoned) is useful with a full skirt when it’s too cold for just a short jacket, but I guess you don’t really wear skirts when it’s that cold.

  • Star (Lise) replied 2 weeks ago

COOKIE I too prefer my double breasted trenches closed. Interesting observation.

  • The Cat replied 2 weeks ago

Glad you figured out how to style your navy peacoat in ways that appeal to you. The coat is too nice not to get worn at least a few times a year. :-)

I know that #6/7 is not your favourite, but to my eyes this is a stunning outfit. Love how your boots are bookending your hair while at the same time your pants are bookending your top. And somehow, these styling tricks steal the attention from the dark peacoat. To my eyes, the two light combos from top to toe would make it possible for you to wear a topper in virtually any colour and look gorgeous.

  • Brooklyn replied 2 weeks ago

It’s a beautiful coat. I think it looks lovely with the darker bottoms but I can see how that makes it less versatile for you - you love a light palette. Have you tried it with other mid to dark bottoms? I think you have brown pants?

I’m glad you’ve found a way to wear it!

  • Dee replied 2 weeks ago

Very clever styling Angie, wearing the burbery coat with the darker bottoms seems to turn this length of coat into a type of outerwear blazer with these outfits. Looking ever so polished and chic. Happy you've sorted a nice way to wear it again

  • Janet replied 2 weeks ago

It’s a lovely coat and I can easily both how it is worth keeping and how it’s not the easiest to wear! I find that kind of length very challenging because it does tend to divide one’s proportions nearly in half. I like the versions with the navy pinstripe pants, which I would want to steal if they were my size, LOL!

  • LJP replied 2 weeks ago

Well I think this is a stunning look . So chic and sophisticated.  Those pinstripe jeans kill me and I want a pair !

  • RobinF replied 2 weeks ago

Beautiful coat. I see what you mean, the dark bottom looks are definitely better than the light, even though I like those too. Love the wide flares with the more fitted boot, so sleek looking.

  • cat2 replied 2 weeks ago

IIRC, you have a fun brooch? Is it big enough to stand out on your coat? That might add some additional character.

  • Joyce B replied 2 weeks ago

While understanding that the person who wears the outfit is the one who must like it, I love the brightness of the column of cream, it lights up the entire outfit and shows off your beautiful coloring.
I also love the last outfit. I think I favor relaxed but structured bottoms with the peacoat. I think the cream barrels and the shape of the bottoms in the last outfit seem to taper the slight flare of the coat, although maybe the vibe is more casual.

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

I don't think I have a favourite dark bottom of the three shown here. I love them equally with this topper.

Kyle, glad this was a helpful exercise, and appreciate the hair love :)

Sal, thank you! Creating a column of colour is a handy technique. You do have to like the colour you are column-ing with though ;)

Irina, with this particular topper, I do! With cropped pants themselves - I don't need to create a longer leg line. I have my limits, I guess ;) - and thanks for the hair love.

Thank you, Slim Cat! Go Team '70s, and thanks for the hair compliment.

Bijou, thank you, and please live!

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

Sharan, thanks for taking an interest!

Star, thanks! Makes sense you like the slim silhouette the best - that's your thing! Yeah, you need to like the colour you're creating the column with ;) - and fab you enjoyed the outfit lab.

Cookie, thank you! To answer your question: I like double breasted toppers buttoned up too. I do that when it's colder. That said, about 15 years ago I developed a likeness for DB's OPEN, and now I visually prefer it. I like the lines, boxy width, and maximal placement of the buttons. So do that, weather-permitting. I'll leave Winter skirt wearing you ;)

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

The Cat, thank you for your awfully kind words, and fab outfit observations. Much appreciated, and good to know! I see what you're seeing, and it's a lovely alternative perspective. The look might grow on me :)

Brooklyn, thank you! I do love a light and bright palette :) Yes, I have many pairs of toffee pants and lighter blue jeans. A pair of dark brown suit pants too. Less contrasting than the bright cream, yet still not my favourite. Although, it might grow on me!

  • Windchime replied 2 weeks ago

I enjoyed this demo of outfit creation with something that’s not getting much wear. The contrast of the rich navy with the little pops of white and bright is really eye catching in the best way. I’m glad you found some ways to wear that gorgeous peacoat when the mood strikes.

  • Lisa replied 2 weeks ago

Beautiful navy coat. What a clever hack to pair it with darker bottoms to get the same vibe visually as if the coat was longer. I'm taking notes because this works perfectly! I adore the darker coat and bottoms paired with lighter jumpers and boots. A column of dark is a nice change up once in a while to keep outfits interesting. So glad you're able to find a way to make the Burberry work for you, it's a lovely coat.

  • April replied 2 weeks ago

Ooh, that lining! Glad to see the Burberry out and about. :)

  • Suz replied 2 weeks ago

Oh, I LOVE it and love the outfit combos you showed that you like best. Thanks for showing us difference between high and low contrast. I agree, it's better with a darker bottom! But it is fab.

And oh -- if you wore your darker tan/whisky trousers (you have some, I think? or maybe jeans...) you could be matchy-matchy with your Burberry scarf!

  • JAileen replied 2 weeks ago

Well, that is a pretty great coat, and I can see why you have kept it.  The nice thing is you learned why you didn’t want to wear it and can avoid that mistake in the future.  The outfits all look very nice, but not very much like Angie - where is the orange? the red? the pink?

  • Carol replied 2 weeks ago

The cream barrel look is my favorite--maybe because it does bring out that sporty length. Puts it more in that vintage/bomber/pea coat/ready-for-take-off mode....also, who doesn't like white and navy?

  • LJP replied 2 weeks ago

I apologize for skimming and not reading through the entire post before commenting . I see there is a thought process going on that I need to lay attention to ;). I’ll dive in in detail when I get home from work !

  • Bonnie replied 2 weeks ago

I love every outfit but I think my favorite is with the white jeans. I don't have a Burberry peacoat but I do have a navy jacket and I'm inspired to try to copy your look because I have those curve jeans.

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

Dee, “outerwear blazer” is dead right. I like that terminology! It’s also a lighterweight coat I can easily keep one inside, so there you go. Appreciate the kind compliments :)

Janet, I’ remember you not enjoying this length of outerwear either. I must be more mindful of that in future. I can see you rock my navy pinstriped pants!

LJP, thanks for the kind words! Not to worry about skimming ahead to the pics - I do that too, and it’s natural :) Maybe you’d prefer my navy pinstripe trousers in black, and please live!

Robin F, thank you! I like wide legs and flares with tailored boots too. Kind of grounding, IYKWIM.

cat2, YES!  I have the BEST vintage Yorkie brooch from 1961! See Find. I’ll pop it onto the coat and add my gold boots! Could be festive :)

  • Cookie replied 2 weeks ago

Oh, that Yorkie brooch TAKES THE CAKE.

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

Cookie, oh, I know! It couldn't own a more magical-for-me brooch.

JoyceB, such a sweet thing to say, thank you! I like the juxtaposition of the relaxed slouchy cuffed jeans with the strict military peacoat too. Appreciate your analysis!

Windchime, it’s been a while! Fab to see you chime in. And thanks for the kind compliments!

Lisa, YES!  Fun to change things up once in a while because like you, I enjoy variety in my outfits. Thanks for your positive and kind comments, and always :)

April, we need a skirt in the plaid of that lining!

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

Suz, thank you! I can see you wear these outfits! Maybe with your silver or black patent boots :) You and Brooklyn are on the same brown page. Yes, I have many pairs of toffee pants. Less contrasting than the bright cream, yet still not my favourite. Although, it might grow on me!

JAileen, I know, right? These are not my typical looks! I’ll do a version with a citron bag and citron top so that you recognize me ;)

Bonnie and Carol, it’s rather fabulous that you like the look I like the least, the BEST. Case in point: we all see different things. Fashion and style is sooo subjective. Thanks for the encouragement, and Bonnie - humbled to have inspired you.

  • Jenni NZ replied 2 weeks ago

Well, I really like the outfit you don’t, with the white barrels.
I do love the navy pinstripes, legs look so long in those.
I am thinking that what I like is partly my own preferences- I enjoy contrast and tunic length/long over lean.
I also love cat2’s idea of the brooch, your gorgeous Yorkie brooch.
Yorkshire seems to be coming up lately!

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

Jenni, thanks for the encouragement! It's natural to gravitate to the version of a look that suits your own sartorial preferences - something we all do at some point ;)

I am Team ANYTHING Yorkshire. Especially the canine version.

  • LJP replied 2 weeks ago

I do agree that the cream bottoms don't have the same effect as the dark ones ....but I still do like them here.  To me, leg lengthening isn't an issue with your body type ;).

  • Rock replied 2 weeks ago

As I follow the saga of the Burberry pea coat, I empathize with the experience of a lesson learned.  Years ago, I bought a short black Burberry trench that came with a leather plate buckle belt instead of a self belt.  I had it tailored, loved it, and wore it a lot.  Then the prong on the belt broke.  The lesson learned is that a self belt has greater longevity for a wardrobe item I plan to keep for a long time.  At some point, I will purchase a new Burberry belt to replace the broken one, but the price point chafes a bit.

I admire that you can approach the learning experience with positivity and gratitude for clarity you have gained.  Two thumbs up for the idea of adding the stunning Yorkie brooch and gold boots combo.  To my eye, all of the outfits in this outfit lab are terrific, but I enjoy head to toe dark neutrals.  I would love to see more photos of the coat paired with citron, the brooch, and the gold boots!

  • Angie replied 2 weeks ago

LJP, appreciate the encouragement for the white bottoms version. I'm warming up to it ;)

Rock, URGH! Thanks for sharing your Burberry story. That sodding belt :( And Burberry prices at the moment are especially high. I get the chafing. At least you wore it a lot! Thanks for the kind words, and I'll get the brooch and citron versions out soonest!

  • kkards replied 2 weeks ago

Well, i love all the outfits.  I know you don’t like the coat with the cream jeans, but I do!  Proving, once again, that fashion is highly personal.

  • lyn67 replied 2 weeks ago

Love your hair, Angie!!  I do have a similar cut and color peacoat which I don't wear anymore. It was a great piece when worn with dressy and structured slim cut  office clothes for me- so that I was creating a dark and structure column for the colder seasons with it. Think  that you are totally right the coat is beautiful but creates too big of a contrast in style, color and newer fashion vibes with your other current items.

  • aloha emily replied 2 weeks ago

This is so helpful! Understanding the thinking behind the problem and the solutions helps me apply the principles in my own wardrobe. Thank you!

  • Angie replied 1 week ago

kkards, thank you! Yes, we see different things! I don't think the white jeans version is bad - just not in love with it. I suspect it will grow on me ;)

Lyn67, thanks for the hair love! And yes, exactly. That's why the Burberry does not come out often ;)

    Emily, glad this was helpful!

  • Angie replied 1 week ago

I'm back to say that the white barrel jeans option shown here is growing on me, and I will probably wear it :)

  • Jonesy replied 1 week ago

I just read through this thread and it's so interesting to see your evolution, Angie! I think the barrel jeans outfit is my fave (love the trendy shape of the pants with the classic lines of the coat), but they are all fab. And that Yorkie brooch is soooo amazing--I remember it well!

  • Angie replied 1 week ago

Thanks, Jonesy! I'm even more encouraged knowing that the white barrel jeans version is your fave :) Thanks for the kind words!
