Chopped it all off

'70s shag hairstyle project is out the window, and here's why:

Looked good but kept on feeling off.

Too much hair. Not enough structure. Too much hair all over the place in my windy and rainy on foot  lifestyle. Especially when I wear hoods and beanies. Felt unpolished.

And it's how you FEEL in a look that counts!

This tough, tough 2020 year is about making the most of what you have, as well as keeping things comforting, familiar, and easy. On that note, I am lucky to be able to wear very short hair that air-dries with a wave to look reasonably good, current, and polished. No fuss. I'm milking it!

So I'm back to a pixie, but it's SOFT. Longer around the ears, no sharp edges, gently tousled, no razor cuts, and lots of movement - as far as pixies go, anyway ;)

I had it cut yesterday. This is air-dried with a bit of product. I can also flat iron it straight for a more sleek and 2015 look. Or throw in some curl for a 1920's look. It's versatile.

Greg saw the new 'do and said, " THIS is you!"

He loves it. I love it. Sam approves. And that is that :)

Gorgeous! And I’m envious that you have a comfortable place for getting a cut. My self cut from a 6 weeks ago is getting mighty shaggy. And DH may need to sport a man-bun soon.

  • Angie replied 3 years ago

Karen13, we are in phase 2. (It took A LONG TIME for Seattle to get there). My stylist has the BEST set-up. It's only you and her in the salon. That's how she operates. She rents a room.  Masks, sometimes ace shields and santizing galore. I felt very safe.

    DH's man bun sounds fably 2020 :)

  • kkards replied 3 years ago

Love. Agree 100% with Greg, this is you.
And the yellow sweater just seems to make it shine!

  • nuancedream replied 3 years ago

Sensational! I concur with Greg and Sam's approval too. The soft, tousled pixie is perfect.

  • Style Fan replied 3 years ago

Gorgeous!  I completely agree with you that you have to feel great in your hair.  This does look like you.

  • unfrumped replied 3 years ago

    Looks great!
You can wear a variety of styles. I do agree, outdoor hair is very different from indoors. It’s why I’m leery of so many hair-do photos. One gust of wind and... Unless there is a plan for hair ties or clips. Which then is a totally different look.

  • Angie replied 3 years ago

kkards, Andrea and Style Fan, thanks for being so lovely! I appreciate the cheerleading.

  • Angie replied 3 years ago

unfrumped, oh my word, you're right! I lead an urban walking life in the elements. I live by the water. Always windy. Hair that flies around and gets wet is a disaster - like lipgloss and long hair :(

  • Minaminu replied 3 years ago

Super! I liked the previous haircut but this seems to be more you, it suits you very well!

Btw, tomorrow will be the first day that hairdressers will be opne in the UK. I managed to book an appointment for the 6th september, wish me luck!!!

  • Brooklyn replied 3 years ago

    Looks great!

  • Angie replied 3 years ago

    Thanks, Brooklyn!

Minaminu, thank you, and oh my word! Two more months. Hang in there :(

  • nemosmom replied 3 years ago

Wow wow wow! Your hair was great before, but it is spectacular now. I am jealous!

  • Joyce B replied 3 years ago

Looking fab, Angie, but most important is that you feel fab and the hairstyle works for you.

  • taylor replied 3 years ago

LOOK at you,  beautiful lady !

This IS you!  It is always about how we FEEL ,be it hair , clothing or how others respond and react to us.
Looking super fab,  color is spot on !❤️

  • Classically Casual replied 3 years ago

It looks great, Angie, and I totally relate to the need to be rain and wind proof in July!

My hair is long enough on one side to tuck behind an ear, but I default to a barrette when outdoors.

Maybe like there are “sitting shoes” maybe there’s “sitting hair”?

  • Angie replied 3 years ago

Nemosmom and Joyce, I appreciate your gracious and kind words.

Taylor, YAY! Thanks for the professional thumbs up, and for always saying nice things about my hair :)

Peggy, as a Seattleite, you get it! You have to have hair that works with our weather. You can absolutely have sitting hair - like in So Cal where people commute in cars all day, and the weather is extremely mild.

  • Jenn replied 3 years ago

So glad you found something that works for you and makes you happy!

  • Jenni NZ replied 3 years ago

Well Angie it looks beautiful and you do always tell us to follow our feelings!

  • Mirjana replied 3 years ago

GORGEOUS!!! I also said " This is you". You look wonderful, your eyes are shining.

  • Janet replied 3 years ago

Cute! Well, you look great in any hairstyle, but especially one that makes you happy.

My hair is increasingly...I don’t even know what to call it. Everything is wrong this year, and I’m still wary of going to the salon, so who knows what is in store for my hair? My husband tells me it still looks good but he may just be being kind. LOL I feel a mess! I’m not sure whether a cut minus color will make things better or worse — at least now with all the layers so long, I can just ignore it and pull it back in a ponytail!

  • Lucy replied 3 years ago

Beautiful! And that last photo with Sam is just soooo sweet! <3

  • rachylou replied 3 years ago

I imagine the irritation. This looks great and no fuss :)

  • replied 3 years ago

    Looks fab- and awww Sam!

  • Joy replied 3 years ago

Wow, you have the best hair. It looks as pretty as ever. The last photo of you and Sam is so adorable.

  • Sal replied 3 years ago

Absolutely it is fantastic and pleased you have a style that works so well for you! You look great!!

  • kellygirl replied 3 years ago

It is stunning on you and suits you to a tee. Practical, stylish and versatile is a win in my book! Enjoy and good for you for knowing what works for you!

  • Bonnie replied 3 years ago

Wow! You look great. You have beautiful waves.

  • replied 3 years ago

I SO get this . This is definitely a you look :) I’m really craving defined and precise hair too right now .

  • pil replied 3 years ago

    Love it!

  • RD replied 3 years ago

This makes me smile, because it is more like what I have envisioned last time you had us help you choose your hairstyle. So cute on you, polished and fresh !

  • April replied 3 years ago

Of course you always look wonderful - what I want to know is how little Sam-Sam looks so polished?

Our Bodie is a total ragamuffin.  Home haircuts (random and semi, since he hates being groomed and runs away), lack of professional attention since February, and many daily romps in our meadow have turned him into a hot mess.  How does Sam look so sharp?

  • CarolS replied 3 years ago

It looks so good on you, Angie! Enjoy. I tend to agree that an outdoor/walking lifestyle require hair short enough that it won't blow all over or long enough it can be pulled into a pony tail. Short is your perfect option. :-)

  • Suz replied 3 years ago

    Gorgeous, Angie!!

And I absolutely get this! I really struggle with "longer bits" at the back. I mean, I can do it a little teeeeny bit, but there's always a risk things will get out of hand. And in terms of between-cut styling, I need it to be no fuss at all. A bit of product and go is my motto. If you walk all the time in wind, you need a style that won't get caught in your specs. With masks, there is yet another layer of fuss. So it's ultra important to be fuss free.

Luckily, this looks beautiful on you too!

  • anne replied 3 years ago

    Lovely!

  • madeline replied 3 years ago

Very pretty! And you look so happy! That’s the best thing!

  • Runcarla replied 3 years ago

Totally get it.  This ‘thing’ that is happening is changing us all, but it doesn’t mean that everything that happened before needs to be changed.  Right now my hair is in a good place (5+ months grow out) and I can get it into a ponytail if I’m having a bad hair day.  Haircut appointment in 2 weeks - and I’m back and forth on which direction to take.

I’m supposed to get 2 important ID photos that I will have to look at for the next 5 years - just before my birthday (in 4 months) so I’m trying to think long term!

  • bridgie replied 3 years ago

Very pretty Angie. The style looks like YOU. Btw, that Sam is a good looking little fellow.

  • Barbara Diane replied 3 years ago

    Your smile says it all.
You look great  in many styles, but you know what feels right for you.

  • deb replied 3 years ago

Yep, that is you. You wear this style so well!!

  • Windchime replied 3 years ago

This style looks just as fab on you as the previous one!  Yes, having hair flying into your face and eyes is really annoying.  I’ve been dealing with a lot of that as my usually very short cut has been growing out.

When I read the thread title, at first I thought you perhaps grabbed a scissors and chopped off your own hair!  I’ve briefly toyed with that idea once or twice since mid March.  :)

  • Bijou replied 3 years ago

Perfect, now you are all set for your birthday celebrations. Photo 10 is just divine, so glad that Sam approves.

  • JAileen replied 3 years ago

    Really pretty!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 3 years ago

I love it, too, Angie! It does look very You. I had my hair cut yesterday, and I think I have a very similar cut to yours.

  • Jenni NZ replied 3 years ago

Ha, Angie, I just remembered: “ A girl has to have a hair project”! And I said no, I preferred a shoe project! You may need to join me :)
Also, to Suz who likes “a bit of product and go” - I like “no product and go”!

  • slim cat replied 3 years ago

Very polished haircut - perfect for Seattle weather! Love the clean back look - so craving it right now ( still trimming my hair ... ).
You look happy and radiant ( Sam is adorable as always :) ).

  • Cardiff girl replied 3 years ago

Very pretty and very you.l agree that it’s so important in the current situation to hang onto the things that make you feel like you if you know what I mean.

  • Star replied 3 years ago

    Perfect!

  • Mainelady replied 3 years ago

Soft, sensational and Sam approved! Angie, you really do look radiantly happy. Best style ever!

  • Liesbeth replied 3 years ago

Well you always look great, but I'm glad you feel great now too!

  • Zaeobi replied 3 years ago

I agree, this look is quintessential Angie!

That said, I can definitely sympathise with the concept of 'weatherproofing' your hair. I think that's why my lazy style of clipping all my hair up onto the top of my head in a little 'pouf' actually works best for me - it retains the softness of my curls without having them slip out to get stuck against my neck in the humidity (like in a headband) or without sitting too flat against my head (which they often would when they're being pulled taut into a ponytail). I ironically find it *harder* to look polished when my hair is shorter, because the layered wisps would often blow everywhere (I remember I would forever be catching my short bob in my glasses, argh!) And I think we all know what happens to curls with no weight to pull them in a particular direction - it takes double the effort to get them to sit in a particular way & to then *stay* there for the whole day. I would rather spend my morning minutes on other things (like sleeping for longer) :P

Anyway, all of that just to say everyone's concept of 'practical' hair is different - glad to see this works for you!

  • amiable replied 3 years ago

I love it! This is completely you, and I’m with you on “too much hair” - that’s how I feel about my shoulder length hair right now. I’m craving a return to the pixie too but so far resisting, wondering if just a little longer and I’ll be fine with it :)

  • annagybe replied 3 years ago

    I think it looks great.
You know it works for you, and your lifestyle, and style.

  • Inge replied 3 years ago

You already know what I think :-) GORGEOUS!!! xxx

  • ChristelJ replied 3 years ago

So becoming and such a beautiful texture. Very happy for you that it feels right. You did good!

  • Laurel replied 3 years ago

Was Sterling's account hacked?  Those posts seemed out of character, or maybe an "inside joke" that I didn't understand.  Hope all is well with her, and with everyone.

  • Jaime replied 3 years ago

Your hair looks beautiful - I love the wave and the short, structured cut really highlights your beautiful features and cheekbones. I miss the structure too! I am planning to hold out until the end of the summer, but you are tempting me :) !

  • Laura replied 3 years ago

This is air-dried and that's it? Fabulous! A lovely 'do for your birthday month!

  • Eliza replied 3 years ago

Beautiful; at once familiar and fresh. Most of all, very Angie. Enjoy it!

  • cindysmith replied 3 years ago

    Absolutely adorable!

  • Angie replied 3 years ago

Thank you for the kind words and compliments!

  • Diana replied 3 years ago

Ooh, Angie, it’s fantastic. Very you!

I would like to take a moment to expound on my earlier comments.

Those comments are NOT LIKE ME.  I have been struggling these past four months with so many different emotions.  I misdirected those emotions and felt immediate and intense embarrassment.  I am so grateful that I was able to delete those posts.

I have no defense other than stupidity.  Those comments have nothing to do with Angie or with YLF.  They have to do more with the state of the world as I currently view it from my window.  They reflect a profound sense of helplessness and possibly a bit of depression.

To anyone I might have hurt or offended, you have my profound apologies.  I especially wish to apologize to Angie.  The fact that you ignored my comments suggests to me that you are the epitome of understanding and class.  You lead by example.

  • Helena replied 3 years ago

    Perfect for you Angie!

  • Joy replied 3 years ago

Sam wants a really short summer cut like yours..

  • lyn67 replied 3 years ago

Wow, love it! I first thought you have your hair up in bun somehow, that is how feminine  it looks! YLF Angie, and Greg said it well, That's really You,  in 2020!:-))

  • JP replied 3 years ago

You look gorgeous. I love your hair!!!

  • Jjsloane replied 3 years ago

So lovely! Your shining smile shows it off beautifully! I'm with Janet and have way too much hair now but still not ready to try salon. Self bang maintenance is showing.
