First Poshmark Purchase: MY Brown

I had a cognac bag on my shopping list.

FINALLY, found exactly the right one on Poshmark for a song! The bag usually retails for $500. I bought it for $118 - brand new with tags! Never used. The service was excellent because the seller is organized. (My next potential purchase with Poshmark is not going as smoothly, unfortunately. Disorganized seller).

I have two bags like this is other colours: light blue and pink. I know it's a winner hence I triplicated.

I went to Pom Pom London to get my favourite straps to complement it! Brown (and orange). Gorgeous quality.

THIS is my brown. An orange brown, that I find very versatile. Works well with my brights, whites, golds, and blues. It matches my loafers perfectly! Works with my mules too. And my animal print belt, grommet belt, and old pleather moto. THIS is the brown I want in a pair of short boots. Tall order! (I have the tall boots already - three NAS's ago).

I've worn the bag a lot already, with matching shoes - and mismatched shoes! It works well throughout the year despite the stereotypical autumn colour. I LOVE IT!

My Cognac, Whiskey, Saddle capsule - or however you want to describe this colour - is coming along.

Thanks for looking. xo

I tried the second hand market again this fall. So far, 1/4 of the orders have arrived in the advertised condition. I have had to send back a thing that was clearly worn and had the tags put back on, a thing that wasn’t the advertised size and stank of pets, and a thing that had been damaged. I am once again swearing off of second hand. Remind me of this thread if I slip again.

Welcome new wardrobe pet! What a score! And the straps are the icing on the cake!  Love how you’ve styled it and can only imagine all the other possibilities!

  • Angie replied 3 months ago

cat2, you put a lot of trust in the info online - especially when you shop secondhand - and it's by no means flawless :( Agreed, you need a bit of luck! I was lucky with this awesome bag purchase! I don't expect that to be the norm. Hopefully you'll have a better experience next time!

merwoman, thanks for the kind words! It took a while, and was worth the wait :)

  • Roberta replied 3 months ago

Major score! And the perfect size and color for you. Wear it in good health.

  • Dee replied 3 months ago

Yay!! What a wonderful find. Looks perfect, love your guitar strap. ENJOY!

  • Dee replied 3 months ago

    Oops, accidentally posted twice.

  • Sal replied 3 months ago

Perfect! I have had really good success with bags second hand- not the fit issues with things like shoes or jeans. This is wonderful for your whiskey collection.

  • Angie replied 3 months ago

Such sweet comments, Roberta and Dee! Thanks :)

Sal, yes! You've had marvelous second hand bag purchasing success! Inspirational. Much easier to fit than clothes...

  • Irina replied 3 months ago

    Congrats, Angie! Looks fab!
I’m careful with Poshmark purchases and like you, usually go for a known to me piece. I bought there 3 pairs of the same style jeans in different washes and happy with results.

  • Janet replied 3 months ago

    Great score!

I’ve sold more on Poshmark than I’ve bought, but I’ve had mostly good experiences. Scarves, a bag, COH Emerson jeans in a faded black wash, and some discontinued Athleta hiking pants that I’ve worn into the ground. I’m pretty careful with secondhand purchases that can’t be returned — I try to stick with items that don’t rely on perfect fit, or items I have seen/tried in person at full price.

I’ve had good experience on The Real Real too. I’m careful to buy items that can be returned unless I’m reasonably sure I can make them work. Most recently I got this great burgundy bag for my burgundy capsule. I’ve used it quite a bit already even though I thought it wouldn’t go into action until fall.

Lovely! Looks great in your outfits. Good score!
I like cognac as well, have recently bought a top in that colour which I will show eventually.

  • Mirjana replied 3 months ago

Great bag, very versatile. I adore cognac bag and wear mine throughout the year. You styled it perfect.

  • JAileen replied 3 months ago

I love your browns!  This shade of brown I call British Tan.  In fact, I think Coach called their medium browns British Tan back in the day.  When it’s worn with navy, it feels very summery to me.

I’ve bought a few things on Poshmark, with mixed results.  Some things have been really great, others, less so.

  • Ginger replied 3 months ago

Wow! Such a great deal! Congratulations for finding it on Poshmark, too. I shop a significant amount there (especially now that I figured out how to save searches) and overall my win rate is really good.

And much agreed, orange-brown/golden brown is my favorite brown. True brown feels flat and too dark and too cool, and tan/beige is faded. Plus, golden brown bookends my hair!

  • Angie replied 3 months ago

Thanks for the kind words Mijana and Jenni! You'll sport this brown soon I hope :)

Irina and Janet, you are wise to be careful with Poshmark. You win some - and you loose some secondhand shopping this way. I'm about to return an item so we'll see how that goes. I'm not buying from the TRR again. You are out $25 each time an item does not work because they charge for shipping. And, items are often not returnable.

JAileen, it's crapshoot, isn't it! British Tan works well too ;)

  • Angie replied 3 months ago

Ginger, I like your description of Golden Brown! HIGH FIVE. And good job doing well with Poshmark. Luck on your side ;)

  • Carol replied 3 months ago

Poshmark mostly works. I shop there more than any other place, and yes--brand new stuff is easy to find. I wanted some Naturalizer heels yesterday, and saw so many that were brand new, at half the price.

Hence why I shop there a lot!

Once in a while, a seller is unresponsive or shady. The advice I got from an employee is to concentrate on items that have been posted or updated very recently.

Such a gorgeous bag, and I think I am most impressed with the strap that you chose, having the same color. And great with the shoes!

  • Runcarla replied 3 months ago

I’ve spent all summer looking for the right sandal in just that colour of brown!  Congratulations on sourcing a beautiful bag at a great price, and I’m glad to learn your second hand experience was a good one.

  • Carol replied 3 months ago

Angie--also, another great tip, if you have not discovered already, is the "offer" section. You can make a lower offer, but what I like to do is wait for the seller. I will scroll through a category of something I want, say "t-shirt dresses," and by the time I use the like button on 8 or 10 of them, I have usually gotten a couple of lower offers from sellers. Sometimes it's only items you are less interested in, but usually it's something I am interested in.

  • Bonnie replied 3 months ago

Love the bag and the straps are so cool!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 3 months ago

Perfect! What luck, Angie. Maybe this is a good sign that your cognac booties will find you soon!

  • Style Fan replied 3 months ago

Gorgeous bag, Angie!  I have purchased a few items on Poshmark, and about half of them are winners.

  • LJP replied 3 months ago

Great timing!  Just this morning I was  composing a post in my head to ask for everyone's best tips for online resale shopping .

I have purchased 2 things through Poshmark but found them completely by accident . The searching intimidates me due to the sheer number of items on the site.  And what if I don't know exactly which brand or label I might consider?

Anyways, that's a lovely bag and a nice price too!

  • Jaime replied 3 months ago

Well you can imagine my delighted smile when I saw the title of this post :) . The bag looks perfect for you and on you - I am so glad you had a good experience. I am sorry there have been so many bad experiences reported on this thread. LJP I think I might have a thing or two to suggest, I will see what I can come up with ;) .

  • Lisa replied 3 months ago

*passes out from matchy matchy perfection*

  • Angie replied 3 months ago

Lots of mixed success shopping at Poshmark. Fascinating. I suspect you need to go in with low expectations. Like the NAS!

    Carol
, those are great tips! Good to know.

Style Fan, aha! More mixed success. That's the way it goes....

bonnie and Sharan, thanks so much! My fingers are crossed I'll find the right whiskey boots :)

LPJ, yes to Poshmark's overwhelming amount of items! Personally, I'll stick to items that I know when purchasing secondhand online. AND I want them to be new! Less risky.

  • Angie replied 3 months ago

Jaime, of course you're delighted, and have lots of great tips to share!!

    *passes Lisa the smelling salts*

    :)

  • Lisa replied 3 months ago

    *revived*

I've never purchased from Poshmark but I have from Ebay and my strategy is to stick with new items with tags. It's just less risky when I can't do a return and I don't know the seller.

The new bag is gorgeous and the bag strap is such a delightful addition to the bag. The price made it a slam dunk purchase! Your new brown-ish capsule is coming along nicely! It's fun and inspiring to see how you incorporate these colors into outfits with your brights. :)

  • Angie replied 3 months ago

Thanks, Lisa! I like your wise online purchasing strategy! Appreciate the kind words too :)

  • slim cat replied 3 months ago

Great score! Love the look #3 with gold shoes - bright, happy and energetic!

  • cat2 replied 3 months ago

Yeah, I did new with tags only, only brands or specific things from brands we usually buy, and returnable. So frustrating, I would like this to be a viable option.

  • Olive Green replied 3 months ago

I own three bags and two of them are this colour. They are calling it cognac. Looks good with mustard or orange shoes, as well as browns.
    Triplicating new favourite word.

  • Angie replied 3 months ago

Slim Cat, your lovely words are soothing! Thank you.

cat2, I like to shop "new with tags" for secondhand too.

Olive Green, Go Team Cognac Bag! Like you, I find it versatile. Great with orange! YES to triplicating. See my triplet wardrobe pets below ;)

  • Eliza replied 3 months ago

Lovely find, Angie. Saw this after posting about cognac accessories on today’s blog. Enjoy!

  • Karie replied 3 months ago

What a great deal and a beautiful bag!

  • Angie replied 3 months ago

Eliza and Karie, thank you! It's a versatile colour.

  • lyn67 replied 3 months ago

Wow, triplication is serious love-but we all have favourite things which simply work great in an wardrobe-so happy you got it! It was a great find and deal! This brown is a neutral/natural and a classic genuine leather color and goes with everything-love it how you   styled with the citron shirt in nr 3!

  • Helena replied 3 months ago

What a great bag ... Works perfectly for your cognac capsule. YLF as always Angie! x

  • Debbie replied 3 months ago

What a great bag. I have stayed away from Poshmark because it intimidates me. I may have to try again. The color is perfection.

  • Angie replied 3 months ago

    Thanks, everyone! :)

Poshmark can be worth it - but make sure you know what the return policy before you purchase.

  • Suz replied 3 months ago

This is just lovely! And what a great way to get a terrific bag at a good price. I think this sometimes happens with bags -- people only afterwards realize the size or colour isn't quite right for them -- and they can't return. And with a bag, the risks are so much lower than with some other items. Of course in this case it was new and unused, so even better!

  • Bijou replied 3 months ago

What a great score! Kate Spade bags are fabulous; I have two satchels that have had years of use and still are in good condition. I particularly love that shade of cognac brown too - just so lovely with whites and denim and whilst not a colour match for my light blonde hair, it matches tonally.

  • Paula B replied 3 months ago

Well done you!!! I love those boots and that handbag is divine!!!,Hugs,Paula,XXX

  • Angie replied 2 months ago

    Thank you, kind people!

I have similar excellent experiences with Kate Spade bags - hence I pounced :)
